TIMING TRIALS

Keep the tempo when the metronome disappears.

A 30-level progression built around silent timing: establish the pulse, keep tapping without the click and learn from the drift.

Timing Trials is TempoLock’s main progression ladder. The click gives you a starting reference, then disappears; your job is to continue tapping as though the metronome were still there.

How Timing Trials works

  1. Choose an unlocked level. The ladder contains 30 timing trials with different tempos and setups.
  2. Use the count-in to establish the pulse. Do not treat it as a race to react to individual clicks.
  3. Carry the beat through silence. When the click stops, keep tapping at the same rate until the round ends.
  4. Earn stars and unlock the next challenge. At least 1★ is the basic progression target.

Why the click disappears

Playing accurately while a metronome is sounding can become a reaction exercise: hear click, make movement, correct again. Silence removes that continuous correction. If you accelerate slightly on every beat, or relax and fall behind, the error has room to accumulate.

That is why Timing Trials is useful even when you already practise with a metronome. It shows whether you can keep the pulse once the click has gone.

Do not judge a run only by the star count. Look at average timing error and the direction of the offsets as well. A pattern of consistently early taps suggests a different practice problem from random early-and-late scatter.

PRACTICE IDEA

Hear smaller subdivisions without tapping them

During the silent section, imagine eighth notes or sixteenth notes between the beats while continuing to tap only the main pulse. The extra mental grid can make long silent gaps feel less vague.

Who it is useful for

Drummers can use it to check whether a groove tends to rush once the click is removed. Guitarists, bassists and keyboard players can tap the pulse before transferring the same idea to an instrument. It is also useful away from an instrument as a short timing drill.
